Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Tooth Extractions / Wisdom Teeth

THIRD MOLARS

Your third molars are more commonly called "wisdom teeth." Usually appearing in the late teens or early twenties, third molars often lack the proper space in the jaw to erupt fully or even at all. This common condition is called impaction. When any wisdom tooth lacks the space to come through or simply develops in the wrong place of your jaw and becomes impacted, problems can arise. Primarily, damage to adjacent teeth and crowding occurs. In certain cases, the wisdom teeth that cannot come through becomes inflamed under the gums and in the jawbone, causing a sac to develop around the root of the tooth that then fills with liquid. This can cause a cyst or an abscess if it becomes infected. If either of these situations goes untreated, serious damage to the underlying bone and surrounding teeth and tissues can result.

At Bellevue Dental Arts, both Dr. Norman Chiang and Dr. Ryan Chiang are highly trained in extracting wisdom teeth (wisdom teeth removal). Using local anesthetic and possible sedatives, our patients always have a positive experience due to the Doctors’ exceptional bedside manner and patient-first attitude. We provide special healing factors after wisdom tooth removal, called collagen plugs, which almost always eliminate dry sockets and speed up the recovery of tissues.

In most cases both Dr. Norman and Ryan will recommend that all of the wisdom teeth be extracted due to the same time, post-extraction, required to heal. Our dental team has the equipment and training needed to perform such extractions, with a minimal amount of discomfort.

Please call to schedule an appointment for a consultation of your wisdom teeth. Feel free to ask our staff for more information regarding tooth extractions if you feel you may need one.

INFECTED/BROKEN TEETH

Teeth that have broken to the gumline or have high amounts of decay causing pain sometimes cannot be restored. Dr Chiang will always evaluate the specific case and tooth to develop a plan that either fits inside an existing or new treatment plan. Bellevue Dental Arts is a very modern facility with new equipment that creates a very relaxed environment for a sometimes stressful situation.

There are many reasons to restore a tooth versus pulling the tooth and they are all very person and case specific. Here is a small list of reasons for extraction:

  • Broken, cracked, or extensively decayed teeth with poor prognosis
  • Teeth that are unsuitable candidates for root canal treatment
  • Teeth associated with advanced periodontal disease (gum and bone disease) may need extraction
  • Malpositioned or nonfunctional teeth (teeth not utilized in chewing) may need to be extracted
  • Tooth extractions may be required in preparation for orthodontic treatment (braces) in young children
